Which is the most expensive spice in the entire world? I don’t think you need to guess. It’s obviously “saffron”. It is a spice that is derived from a flower, commonly known as saffron crocus. It grows for about 8 to 12 inches. It contains pigments called carotenoid, which imparts a rich beautiful “golden yellow colour” to dishes. Saffron is a native element belonging to southern European and it is estimated that about 90 percentages is cultivated in Italy and including Mediterranean countries. In India, saffron is cultivated only in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. It grows in an optimum temperature which requires about 11 hours.

And cold weather is the flowering season with high humidity. Where and all it is used? In western cuisines it is used in cottage cheese, meat, chicken, rice varieties etc. Sometimes, it is used in cakes, breads, confectionaries and Mugahlai dishes. Apart from dishes, it is also used as cosmetics. In Ayurvedic medications, it is used to heal fever, organ disorders, arthritis, infertility and many more. It is found to be used in Chinese’s and Tibetan medications mostly. As it was said it is the most expensive ingredient. The price goes about $ 2000 to $ 10000 a pound and is worth more than that.
