How to get rid of silverfish?
The silverfish is a wingless insect and it is about an inch in length and has a fish like appearance. It is silvery blue in color and nocturnal. Silverfish prefer dark places and are
most active at night. Its body shape is elongated and the abdomen tapers at the end. They mostly inhabit moist areas within an 80 to 85% F humidity range and the majority of them live about 2 years. In urban areas they are usually found in places such as basements, bathrooms, closets and attics. They feed on starchy substances such as paper, glue, textiles, but they will also eat biscuit and breadcrumbs. I allowed to live unchecked the Silverfish can be untold damages to your home, resulting in thousand of dollars for repairs. The female lays eggs in groups of fifty and they are placed in small crevices. The duration it takes for the eggs to hatch is between two weeks and two months.
To get rid of the Silver fish first we have to get to the source. High moisture areas are potential Silverfish colony. So first, locate areas where there is excessive presence of moisture and eliminate it by using a dehumidifier. So check the causes for the excess moisture; sometimes leaky plumbing could be reason. Silverfish cannot survive in a dry area.
Secondly, we need to locate their food source. Silverfish usually stay close to where their food is. Silver fish loves starch, so most likely you find them there. Keep sugars and cereals in air tight containers, this will cut all possibilities for their presence. Sanitize the areas of infestation and close all the crevices with Silicone caulk.
Lastly zero into the infected zones, most usually the books. In this situation, place the infected books in a plastic cover along with a couple of desiccants and place it in a cool place. If the infestation has spread rapidly then spread desiccants in the bookshelf particularly in the back areas of the shelves.
