Why do dogs lick people?
We humans can talk and express ourselves but what about our precious pets – the dogs, for which licking is a way to communicate with humans and other dogs, especially if one is liked and the dog craves attention.
All dogs, of all breeds and both sexes lick humans. Licking can be an intriguing gesture for a dog owner when the dog greets one with wagging its tail and licking the face. An affectionate dog may follow his owner and visitors and lick their hands and face. Usually, dogs lick in the morning, as a gesture of greeting. Licking can be considered to be a social signal of submission and acceptance where the dogs show respect, regard and admiration for dominant members.
Puppies lick to ask for solid food when they are weaned. Thus, a dog may lick to request food. So, a dogs kissing may actually be a way to request for regurgitating some food. Licking may also be a puppy mouthing behavior. Licking is a way for a dog to display his love and affection and emotion, and to communicate, to show that he enjoys your company.
Usually, licking does not cause any harm but only when it is not in excess. It can be frightening for the strangers. It may not sometimes be a safe behavior as the saliva of the dog may contain bacteria and can cause infections. Licking can turn to be annoying and a dog can be trained to stop licking. Some dog owners may find licking soothing and relaxing. Licking is an instinctive behavior of a dog. A dog may seek attention by doing this. A dog can seem cute and adorable by his licking, expressing unconditional love.
