Why is nutrition important?
To function properly, the body needs energy and this is provided by the food. Just as we put fuel in the car or the phone battery needs to be recharged, the body too needs foods that give energy. Nutrition is the process of consuming food or liquids and their digestion and absorption for the use in health and growth. A healthy and balanced diet provides all these components of nutrition and prevents disease. A good nutrition is the one that provides energy for daily activities, structural components and the various proteins and vitamins. It helps in recuperating and in illness.
Carbohydrates, such as sugar and starch are the main source of energy for our body. The units into which the carbohydrates are broken down into are – glucose, fructose and galactose. Protein is broken into amino acids. The amino acids are used for building and repairing the body parts. The muscles have protein which needs to replenish through diet. Protein is also needed for immune and nervous systems, hormones and other organs.
Calcium is another component of the diet. It is a mineral which is used in the bones and teeth. Our body also needs fats. The cells of the body are surrounded by membranes containing fats. Fatty acids are needed in the brain. They are also essential to signal hormones. Vitamins and minerals are needed in small amounts and are important. They act as co-enzymes helping to speed up the chemical reactions. Vitamin A is required for vision; vitamin C is needed for strong connective tissues and the functioning of the immune system.
There are some other parts of the diet that are essential for a good health. Photochemical is the colorful components of fruits and vegetables and has a powerful impact on the health. Quercetin is found in red apples. It functions as an antihistamine and anti-inflammatory agent. Resveratrol which is a component of the skin and seeds of grapes has a powerful antioxidant effect. Antioxidant protects the body from damage from pollution, the sun, smoke and a poor diet.
